Chapter Six
Haunted Past
âHow in Hell could you just sit there and watch while my brother got fingered like a hand puppet?â
Timothy was obviously distraught. In truth, from his point of view, he had every right to be. Jim Walker was supposed to be some kind of hero of mythic proportions, yet he just stood by while Patrick OâKelly was murdered in cold blood. Hutchinson Ridge indeed had a problem of supernatural origin, and it would require a lot more than a Sunday school sermon to rid Tim of the vignette seared into his memories.
They had scuttled quickly out of the saloon. Jim wasnât sure whether Zoe had any intentions of returning to the scene of the crime, and figured the best course of action was to go somewhere the Skinwalker wasnât. Then again, if his instincts were correct, the abomination knew exactly where theyâd be once they got there. Her sense of smell - and other heightened senses - would help her zero in on whichever hiding spot theyâd chosen. As expected, Tim and Makency had bolted for the church. Jim went along just to humor them.
He searched his brain for any other time in which heâd encountered such a confident being as the beast they just met and came up empty. Since his employ within the field of supernatural eliminations, he never recalled battling a one-man army with a womanâs physique. He also never recalled such a being using human weapons; it was always claws and teeth. Optimistically, maybe this meant an easier solution to the problem at hand. Realistically, perhaps this would be the greatest fight of his cursed lifetime. Even greater than the ones he never mentioned aloud.
Makency dropped down into the closest church pew, grasping tightly to a copy of the Bible. Although rationalism convinced her it was a useless gesture, she always found comfort within books. In truth, it didnât even matter that the book was a Bible. It couldâve been a damn hymnal for all she cared. She inhaled deeply the pages of the weathered tome, savoring the scent as she tried to ground herself. Gripping it to the point of noticeable strain, she exhaled a deep sigh, and with it went some of the tension. It helped that her Winchester rifle managed to make the trip as well. If God couldnât save their lives, then perhaps that fire-barking beauty could.
âAre you asking me or her?â Jim asked, already aware of the answer.
âWhy would he be putting me on the spot for his brotherâs death?â Makency growled. âIâm not the one they fetched from the far reaches of nowhere Mexico to come and slay what was obviously an undead abomination in a cowboy outfit!â
Timothyâs nod of agreement effectively exonerated Makency, leaving only Jim in the hot seat for the horrific incident. This was another reason why he preferred to collect his fee upfront, and most importantly work alone. It meant no one else in his party had lost a loved one in unspeakable ways. Jim believed heâd seen it all up until that moment.
